Aisha Considers Global Fruits!

***
Our family always hosts Thanksgiving dinner and this Thanksgiving my mother in law came to the house bearing fruit... lots and lots of fruit which we used to decorate the table. There was one particular fruit that no one really recognized very well - PERSIMMONS!

Although grown and consumed in the United States persimmons are native to China and for my family at least, not widely known. I didn't know much about this fruit other than that it looked a little like and reminded me a great deal of tomatoes. Found out that persimmons are glossy orange red skinned fruits and excellent sources of vitamin A, vitamin C, and rich in fiber. It got me to thinking - another way to create a little global citizen is by introducing them to exotic fruits from all areas of the globe. We all know about the standard apples and bananas and oranges - but how often do you include pineapples, kiwis, guava, figs and mangoes and persimmons in your little ones diet? Or what about papaya and passion fruit. Do your little ones know what they look like or what country they are grown in? Can they identify that country on a map?

Well - now we know about the persimmon and I am going to try to pick more up and more other great yummy fruits. Just some different options to create a more sophisticated kid palette.

Do you have suggestions for a global fruit that you enjoy! Please share.
